Luncheon on the Grass, 2003
Three types of grass (sod and seed)
36 x 36 feet; approximately 3-month duration
location: Forest Hills Cemetery, Boston
In 'Luncheon on the Grass,' three varieties of grass replace a 30’ x 30’ area of lawn at Forest Hills Cemetery in Boston. The checkered design of the new area echoes the pattern of a picnic blanket, alluding to the history of the cemetery as a popular destination for picnickers when it first opened in the nineteenth century. After the initial planting, the new grass gradually blends into the pre-existing landscape, and over the course of the exhibition, the natural environment reclaims the installation. The project is a collaboration with Daniel Bouthot.
